in the prophecy (in harry potter) what does "die at the hand of the other "mean?

sorry for all my potter questins , but this acccount is made ot ask them....
i mean, does it mean die at the CAUSE of the other? that doesn't really make sense since you'll never know whether one event caused another or not.
lets say harry ate an apple. then neville strikes voldy with a killing curse.... does being the "CAUSE" of it mean if harry had not ate the apple then neville's killing curse would have missed?
something i notice alot ,whether time is sort of balcned on a "scale" or not......

both of them want to kill each other Harry because voldemort killed his parents and voldemort because He believes it will make him stronger. So if there both looking for each other one is going to kill the other. But it does not mean that they HAVE to kill the other one.
