My friend needs the cat on his '98 accord replaced, but he's getting a ridiculous quote from the mechanic. i though that maybe one reason it's so high is because it's welded on, but i think a '98 civic's cat is bolted on, but not sure. the car isn't around for me to check myself. can somebody help me out? thx

all OE catalytic converters are bolt on.
the ridiculous price quote probably has more truth than you might think.
if you're in California, the cat must be smog check II certified now, and is also OBD-II certified.
in California, you are no longer allowed to buy universal cats. If you already have one, you're fine. but when it goes bad, you have to buy the OE model (i.e. bolt on).

for a honda, expect upwards of $400 for the cat.
