is a pit bike good for riding trails?

I most likely getting some type of dirt bike soon and im considering a pit bike, because of the price. there are a lot of trails by my house and they can some times be really muddy (but usually their not) i just want to know if a pit bike can handle trails because i know a lot are meant to race and stuff like mx. THANKS :P
 
Personally, I'd get a honda 70. They're perfect little cruisers. I'm thirteen and ride one, and my dad likes to spin around on it too. It's not a racer and I've ridden trails with it. It is a reliable bike with little problems, nor will it throw you like most race bikes.
