is Chicken and dumplings a main course or side dish?

Okay, I am from southern Virginia. My husband is from eastern Kentucky. Where he comes from, chicken and dumplings is served as a side item along with say...turkey or something. Where I come from, it is served as a main course...by itself. Which one is right? He says when I make chicken and dumplings that I need to make something with it. So, if it is a side item, what do you serve as the main dish in the meal?
