I graduated from USC Film School with a Masters in Screenwriting back in the mid 90's and I have never been able to crack into the business. Since then, with several screenplays and now a book, I doubt my talent (not really) and I wonder if I'll ever see my dreams come true as a produced writer. I write about kick-a*s female characters, hot sex, with action-driven story-lines that I've lived as a sanctioned fighter for six years. Is it me or the industry?

The industry is definitely questionable when it comes to females in general. Not just African American females. And definitely questionable when it comes to writers. Most them tend to be white males.

However, there have definitely been a few successful female AA screenwriters:

Mara Brock Akil
Winifred Hervey
Suzan-Lori Parks
Gina Prince-Bythewood

But then again, it could be the material you're writing. "Hot sex, action-driven storylines" aren't that original, especially in Hollywood.

Hire a white person to play you in the meetings with industry executives to test out your hypothesis.

Maybe you should write under a pen name to see if Hollywood is racist.

Pick a jewish name, because Hollywood is 95% jewish.
