Any religion I don't care what it is, if you truly believe in that shit I honestly think there is a circuit in your head that doesn't fire correctly. I mean honestly people it's 2011 really? A magic man in the sky made everything? Who created him? And don't even get me started on the crazy crap muslims subscribe to. If you honestly believe I'm going to hell I think there is something cognitively wrong with you. I can't believe people actually believe in this crap!

So you think the singularity that created the big bang just appeared out of no where for no reason whatsoever? I don't believe in any particular religion but I'm not oblivious to the fact that there might be a spiritual force far greater than myself. And it is possible that Jesus performed "miracles" considering the number of texts that explain it from witnesses. If you read a history book about an ancient battle would you believe it? If yes, then why will you not accept any of the historical information in the Bible?
 
Well the most prominent reason people believe is childhood indoctrination. This is shown through statistics that say if you grew up in the US you most likely will be Christian, where as if you grew up inthe middle east you most likely will be Muslim. If people were using reason to believe in these religions, and if it was not culturally based, the beliefs would be random across the globe, or one main belief across the globe like it is in science.

In childhood indoctrination they are taught to abandon their reasoning on this, just have faith, and not question God's laws since childhood, and the fear of hell is also indoctrinated into them. So people can be very smart on other subjects, but just subconsciously abandon their reasoning on this one subject.
 
Weellll, Chumley, it's like this. Yes it is. Everyone has a right to their own beliefs and if they bring them comfort and lead them to lead moral and respectful lives, that is their business. I have problems with fundamentalists, not for what they believe but because they have no respect whatsoever for anyone else's beliefs. Which is what you are doing here, you are a definite fundie within your own mind-set.
I've spent 10 years of my life in prison. I've done time with rapists, killers, child molesters, bank robbers, car thieves, you name it. I would trust many of them a lot further than I would trust a lot of the people I know on the streets. Never think less of anyone. It is a major mistake. Many of them may well be better people than you are even if they do believe in a "god".

No, it's not bad at all. You're completely entitled to your opinion and it makes a lot of sense based on what you know as of this moment in 2011. I find it a little strange if you compare an anti-theist belief to historical precedent in the world, the bulk of what people have believed throughout the ages, and in the context that archaeological and physical and biological sciences are constantly changing and finding "new evidences" that refute old premises, proving if anything, that man's knowledge is constantly in flux and cannot be counted on as concrete. But then again, I don't think necessarily that just because most people throughout time have ascribed to a religion means there is a basis for that. It just provides a preponderance of witnesses for that belief.
 
Honestly, I think it's all silly too. But, if people keep it to themselves, I don't care. My whole family is Christian, I was raised Christian. But, I'm not anymore for my own reasons. I keep it to myself around people who are religious because I respect them. As long as they don't bug me about being non-religious I don't bother them. Unless someone crosses me and tries to get me to "convert" I just live and let live. They don't bother me, I don't bother them. There is no sense in judging people on their beliefs. They are allowed to have them. They're not hurting anyone. So, don't judge.
 
You know christianity isn't the only religion out there, this is not the wheel of time (a fantasy novel)or when the catholic church was the main authority.

Myself am not a part of it, I'm a Norse Pagan. And there is no hell in my religion, except if one actually deserves it (say a murderer). And the stories were meant to be symbolical. I don't actually believe that Odin and his brothers ripped apart a giant to make the world. I believe that evolution and the big bang took it's place.
 
Chance did it, really? In 2011, you believe due to random chance the universe somehow magically created itself? You know the Big Bang didn't start itself, and energy is neither created nor destroyed. If you honestly believe that crazy crap, then I don't know what to say about you.
 
In terms of what makes a person a person, yes.

Some of my best friends are similarly deluded, but it doesn't make me think of them as "lesser" in any way, as that's not what makes them valuable people.

I'm not saying there aren't people who are adversely affected by their beliefs and can be problematic, but that's by no means all religious people, so it's not an equivalence.
