Is it odd that my sister in law expects my mom to watch her 3 yo child for 3

days while they go on vacation? Are there any grandparents out there that goes thru this? I'm just wondering if it's normal bcuz this seems very odd to me. I can understand the grandparents taking care of their grand child for 1 day but for the whole weekend?

I don't think it's ok for her to expect her to do it, but I don't see a problem with her asking if she minds doing it. Parents are people, and they need time to themselves where they don't have to be parents. No matter how much you love your kids you need a break once in a while to maintain your sanity, and there is nothing wrong with asking someone for help.

Why would that be odd? I stayed with my grandparents as a child for up to a week, and my husband grew up spending 2 or 3 full weekends each month with his grandparents--just because! I know that my in-laws would be THRILLED to take our child for a weekend or even a week, as would my mother and father. This seems completely normal and natural. :)

It happens all the time. But if her parents feel like they are being taken advantage of, it is up to *them* to speak up about it. You should not get involved.

It's actually very normal. My husband and I have a trip planned and our son will be staying with my mom for 2 nights. Sometimes parents need a break to spend a lone time together. It;s actually better in the long run becuase it gives the parents time to recooperate and work on their bonding and relationship without distraction. Plus it;s good for baby becuase happier and rested parents can take care of their children better. I'm not saying this should happen on a weekly basis or anything, but maybe like a few times per year is acceptable. It;s also good for my mom too becuase she gets to spend time with her grandson.

YES it's NORMAL! I'd keep my granddaughter as long as they'd let me! The more time I have with her the better! YOU are the odd one!

NO this isn't ODD at all! I would happily take care of one of my grandchildren to help my kids! That's what good, loving, parents & grandparents are FOR in my opinion!

My mom has always watched my son if I have a business trip (typically lasts 3-4 days). The only vacations that I've had since my son has been born have included him. :) I don't think your mom should be expected to watch them, but I think it's okay for her to be asked. 3 year olds can be a lot to handle, and your mother may not be up for 3 full days with a toddler.

When my mother remarried (about 24 years ago), my sister and I stayed with our grandparents during her honeymoon (10 days). Lots of grandparents watch their grandchildren, but it's a personal decision.
