Is it ok to play Pokemon Heartgold on the original Ds (Phat)?

Forgive me but I have been absent in the ds era of hand-held consoles (I owned the GBA colour, advance, and the SP). I want to start playing pokemon heartgold and eventually pokemon white (or black, I don't discriminate). I was wondering if there are any features I will miss if I use the old Ds. I am thinking on the terms of downloadable content, if there is any, because I am aware the new ds has wifi.
