I ask because I was explaining to this guy once why I like the band Obscura, and I went on about how great the fretless bass is, anyway I give him my headphones (playing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mesr2siegRg ) and he says "uh, he's just strumming chords" and I'm like "what??? Did you even listen to it??? It goes like this" *hums the bass line* then I turned the bass way up and the treble way down so he could hear it more easily and tried again, and I get the same reaction, so this leads me to believe that maybe some people can't hear fine details in music, and for these people metal really does just sound like a bunch of random noises, I'm guessing that for these people they need music with really clear production preferably electronic, with no distortion, and not too many instruments playing at once.
