Is there a difference between boy's bikes and bmx bikes?

I'm a seventeen year old girl, and I just got a new bike a couple of days ago. I really wanted one just so I wouldn't have to be constantly walking around my neighborhood, it sucks. (and no hopes of a car in the near future) I didn't want to get a mountain bike though, like I always have before. They're way too big and ugly. I wanted to get a sleek and small one, and I picked out a cool green and black boys bike with pegs so me and my boyfriend can glide around. My mom hated it and told me that it was a 10 year old boy's bike. (and it pretty much is, but it looks like a bmx bike) Is this wierd?

no you probably got a bmx bike and the frames are deliberately built small for many reasons, mainly for the type of jumps and street conditions they are ment to be ridden but they are really versitile and will be all good for you.
