Is there a difference between DivX Codec and DivX Player? If so, what's

A codec is a series of instructions to make a video or music file play.

A player is the framework that the video or music plays on.

You have to have a codec that can unscramble the file, and you have to have a player that can turn the unscrambled file into pictures and music.

10-4? 10-4.

The Codec is the code programs use to write and decode the DivX files, whereas the player decodes the files and turn them into video you can watch.

'Codec' means 'coder / decoder'. The player is a program which uses a codec to read the file. If you install the player without the codec, you'll be able to open up a divx window but the video won't show correctly. Think of the codec as a plugin that lets the player understand the file.
