i have ridden bikes bikes before but they have all been 600's, after crashing one i havnt been on a bike in over a year. i recently decided to buy a 250 and i was told not to take it over 5000 rpms for the first 500 miles and not over 10000 rpms the next 500 miles after that? how accurate is this?

Try the motorcycling section. The information you have received is as good as any. I just got a new one and the advice that i was given by the salesperson was to 'take it easy for a few miles'.
