iTunes connectivity problem? Avast! Internet security?

Hey, I have iTunes installed on my computer and when I try to access the iTunes store a message pops up...

'iTunes cannot connect to the iTunes store.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again.'

This wasn't a problem before, but I am definitely connected to the internet (typing this message) so I don't know what's wrong...

It could be that I recently purchased avast! Internet security as a replacement for my norton 360, I have set my firewall settings to home (the most leniant) and so I don't know whats up... please help if you can.
