My Father is scheduled for aortic valve replacement and bypass surgery. About a year ago he developed a condition called black hairy tongue the same time he was receiving radiation for prostate cancer. He is 84 years old and in good health otherwise. He also says his throat feels alittle sore (not related to a cold so not sure if there is any coorelation). Our concern is if this is a fungus it will cause problems with his aortic valve replacement. I believe this is also different from "Thrush". We have seen two infectious disease doctors along with an ENT doctor and all seem to say there would be no issues.
His biopsy of the tongue came back benign. The tissue was not invaded, but apparently this is a yeast like fungus.
My Father really wants to get rid of this before the sugery. He does not chew tobacco, drink alot of coffee or any of the other usual reasons for getting this.....even some of the antifungal medications such as diflucan do not work....
If there is anyone in the medical field that has any information it would be greatly appreciated
