Medieval and Rabbinic Judaism: key events and people?

I needed some understanding the key events that took place in medieval and rabbinic periods of Judaism and how they shaped Judaism in the modern world.
I know the events that took place but have a hard time finding their connection to the modern world.

it'll give you events of both Muslim and Christian tolerance and intolerance during the Middle Ages - especially the intolerance which included expulsions, forced conversions, blood libels, massacres and ghettos from both Muslims and Christians.

You'll have to read and do some research on how that impacted Judaism (not well, obviously)
