my 3 year old son is complaining of belly pain. 5 days ago he spiked a fever of 102.4 out of nowhere. i gave him Tylenol and the fever went away. for two days he continued to mildly complain of a belly ache and wasn't eating as much, but still enough. His bowel movements have been normal. Then he woke up in the middle of the night screaming of stomach pain so i drove him to the emergency room. The doctor pushed on his belly and couldn't get him to show any sign of discomfort. Then looked in his mouth and noticed a red throat and swollen glands. He wasn't swabbed for strep but was discharged with antibiotics. now two days later he is still complaining of stomach pain, the redness in his throat has disappeared and he has just spiked another fever of 102. What is going on? Could his throat or the antibiotics be causing these problems, or could it be serious?

Maybe, first off, I’d like to mention, I’m no expert. Although, I’m guessing it might be an appendicitis. High fever is a symptom of this problem. A catskan should be done, not an ultra sound. Anyways, that's what finally worked in a recent case.

My nine year old sister had a similar thing happen. About four months ago, she had a stomach ache that the doctors had misdiagnosed as a psychosomatic stomach ache. She was home for three days before she started to scream like the world was ending. She landed up in the ER. She was at the hospital after that for a grand total of 2 weeks, err, a few days more at Christmas. She also appeared on the front of a newspaper for children at the hospitals over Christmas.

Anyways, she had a perforated, not just burst, appendicitis. She was too sick to operate on and they kept missing pools of infection. They kept telling us she wouldn’t make it through the night. But somehow, she did. They had to place a perk and a pick line into her because they couldn’t operate on her, she wouldn’t have survived. She got home yesterday from the second hospital stay, this time much shorter. They now, four months later, were able to remove what was left of the appendix.

I wish you the best of luck in finding out what is wrong with your son! You definitely should bring him back to the doctors. I hope he gets better soon!

Poor baby he sounds like he's having a bad time. Unfortunately is could be any number of things. Tylenol has the ability to cause stomach pain and discomfort by irritating the lining of the stomach and small intestines. So if he has been taking it frequently that maybe irritating a already upset tummy. Motrin is more gentle on a little one tummy.
I would be concerned over the possibility that he may have ingested something, or could possibly have a more serious infection due to the continuation of his abdominal discomfort. If his bowels are normal and he has an appetite I would contact his pediatrician and tell them your concerns. Also be sure to inform them of any and all other symptoms, even something that seems inconsequential can be a big help in determining cause. An ultrasound maybe necessary to rule out anything too serious.
