My blue ray player wont allow my to watch blue ray movie!?

So we bought my dad a blue ray player for his birthday, and we bought a movie. we can watch all the movies we downloaded but we cannot watch the actual disk, all the cords are hooked up but all we get is sound with no picture on the screen what could be wrong?

check to see if the disc is scratched if so return it for a different one. If that does not help check to see they have a firmware update for the player.

Do you get a screen image of the player? If not you don't have the tv to the right input. Recheck your connections again.
