my car runs funny and smells after driving a while?

1997 Ford Escort 2.0 Split port induction SOHC 5spd. My car idles very rough and runs very rough driving at low rpm after driving a while, it happens faster if i beat on the car, high rpm shifts, ect. i replaced the catylitic converter with a high flow magnaflow converter, replaced pcv valve with a acdelco valve, no clogs in PCV Hoses, smells bad when it runs this way, not as bad as the old cat did tho. A mechanic said it smells like its running rich, NO CODES OR DASH LIGHTS! i have run out of ideas, money, and time. Any suggestions??
 
well if its not throwing any codes because its a OBD1 car mostlikely via the year of the car and if i would say anything to replace first is a idle air sensor then from there id definelty replace the throttle positioning sensor and if that doesnt do it replace the egr valve
