My DVD burner can't burn dual layer discs anymore. Is the dual layer laser broken?

[Win XP - Nero 9.6.2.0] I can burn regular CDs and 4.7 DVDs just fine. But when it comes to burning the dual layer 8.5 discs, it will say it cant burn it and will fail after caching the files.

My cousin said the dual layer laser maybe broken. Is this true?
Or did something get messed up in a configuration? BIOS maybe?

There's no special burning lenses for dual layer. The laser is just being focused at different layer

But that takes extreme precision.

Over time, a drive wears out, and the first thing to go is dual layer disc capabilities because of how sensitive it is. Is your drive very old, or has been through heavy usage? (like often watching DVD movies in it)

I've seen a lot of people complaining they cant read dual layer disc to install video games, and their drives are so old.

That is, assuming you are using branded dual layer media. When it comes to dual layer disc, for the same reason stated above, you would want to stick to good media brands such as Imation, or even Verbatim though it cost more.

I've personally tried an unknown taiwan brand media, the failure rate was like 4 out of 10 disc.
