My ps2 will only play ps1 games?

I ordered a ps2 from gamestop.It is a refurbished system and i just recieved it today.We played for maybe 10 minutes,and when we tried to play a different game,it wouldnt load.Now it wont load ANY game except ps1 games,and the ps2 games are all clean and practically flawless.It goes to the screen where it says browser,and i go to it,and sometimes it will recognize the disk and let me click it,but it will then go to a black screen,and go back to the searching for disc screen.Why would it be doing this? And can I fix it somehow? My kids are really disapointed

take your shipment receipt/any paperwork that proves where, when and how you paid for it and go to your local GameStop. tell them it doesn't work, and you can return it for another one. the laser is probably bad, and there really isn't a way for you to fix it.
