What is the most important aspect of youth development in football/soccer? I have a 12 yo daughter who loves to play creatively with footskills like the Brazilians and wants to learn more difficult skills and combinations. That is her style and when she gets to play her way she is amazing and we can see the passion that she plays with. Now that she is on a new team she doesn't learn any of that and her new coach is basically playing all the fastest players even though he told me when she joined the team that he thought she's the best 12 yo he'd seen in 10 years. She's been getting benched lately I suppose because she's not one of the top fastest 10 and I'm trying to figure out if he was just snowing me over. I realize by her joining the team that there becomes less competition!
So my question is this....at her age, what is the most important thing? Learning individual skill such as technical skill/footskill? Is it being the fastest? Is it tactical/team play? I'm so confused because I know in America the emphasis is on winning so that would be doing what needs to be done to win (like being fast or tactical play). I've heard that we won't ever get anywhere here in America because we focus on winning while other countries develop their youth individually through technical play (winning becomes a bonus). My gut instinct is to put her back on her old team where she learned the technical individual skills and would be a leader again. Isn't it all about getting to play as many games as you can at this age so that you can develop your style and technique? Also, won't speed and strength come into play through high school years? The team she just joined this season has turned her into a robot and we were afraid that it would ruin her unique style. PLEASE HELP me for all of you experienced players!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to understand the stages of development in soccer and their importance. Do any of you feel that competitive soccer is too structured in order to develop and that a child could play up in AYSO and other things to get as many games in rather than paying thousands of dollars each season?? THANKS SO MUCH if you'd take the time and answer these for me!!!!
