Newbie Question - Fudging die rolls in tabletop RPGs?

My girlfriend and I were trying to find some new stuff to do on weekends, and we thought it might be fun to try a tabletop RPG. So I was trying to DM (never played before, but I'm more organized than she is) and I had a question. We're both new and not really that good at pen-and-paper rpgs; is it like a cardinal rule-breaker to fudge a few die rolls for the sake of the only PC not dying right away?
