I'm getting the Sims 3 very soon, but I've never played the Sims except for the free trial EA posted...
I've looked online for some How-To's for beginners, but can't find anything that really helps me understand the controls or gives me good tips for the game.
Any advice? Or tips? Cheats? Things I should know before I play? Anything will help!

Ctrl + Alt + C
or
Ctrl+ Shift + C (cant remember)
Doing this will open the cheat window, then you type "motherlode"......doing so will give you 50,000 dollars.

You can do what Dustin said, and possibly end up hating the game because of how boring it becomes when you dont have to work for anything. The cheats in this game can get out of hand really quick.

OR, you can decide what you want to do in the game and do it yourself. Achieve it through the games natural design and feel GENUINE accomplishment!

There are MANY things to do on The Sims 3, such as build a fully customized Sim that looks like nearly anything you can imagine. But, first things first, i would decide what profession you want for your character. This is one of the MOST pivotal choices you will make early on and will either make it easy or really hard to save up cash.

This link is a complete listing of career options in the game, as well as the "Money Making" section which gives you all of the self-employed options also. Inside each description it gives you an idea of what traits will help your character progress. This site also has nearly every bit of information you would want to know about The Sims 3! Give it a good examination.

As for the controls, the W,A,S,D keys and the arrow keys will slide your view. Right click and holding will also do this. Middle clicking the mouse and scrolling your mouse alters the pitch of the camera and the scroll zooms in and out. You do not move your sims in 1st or even 3rd person, you tell them what to do and they do it. Right click your Sims portrait on the left and the camera will follow them.

As for the rest of the controls, the manual will give you a rundown as there are way too many to list here.

Some tips
-Keep your Sim happy by fulfilling his needs, the happy sim gets bonus's
-Keep an eye on the pop out windows on the right hand side for information on new events
-Be creative, the sims is a simulation game, create what YOU want out of it to gain the most enjoyment!
-Most of all, HAVE FUN!
