comes through vent in ceiling? My bedroom is now downstairs. Problem: I can hear EVERY whisper and footstep taken in the kitchen and dining room located directly above me. Considering that I have two younger brothers who do much more than whisper and tip toe through the house this is a big problem. Lots of headaches and I'm running out of ibuprofen. I can even hear my dog right now scratching and his collar jingling. Most of the noise comes through the vent in my ceiling just above my bed. Is there a way to reduce this noise aside from tossing some candy on the front lawn and locking the door as the walking boom boxes exit the building? I'm ok with the room getting really cold if I can put something in the vent, but I also don't want anything to catch fire.

A couple side points: (1) The boys didn't seem nearly as loud when my bedroom was right next to them. I'm not sure how to quite explain just how amplified all the noises of the house are in this room. (2) I'm not planning on moving out just yet and I work and study at home right now. It's very hard to concentrate. I may just be more concerned about it today though because it's a holiday which means no school for the kids.

While "suck it up" is a valid suggestion, I am much more open to other more helpful options. Any advice or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I say cover the vent really well. Try and put up some styrofoam tiles on the ceiling to help drown out the noise. You buy a small heater, check with the local hardware store to see what would be best. You could always open a window a crack to ventilate the air.You could always move your room around so that the bed is not directly below the vent. Good luck. I have lived in some noise filled places myself.

(1) Some people have little electric fans running beside their bed to drown out noise. (2) It may take a little getting used to , but try some of the little plastic flexible earplugs. The kind of earplugs used at construction sites or factory floors.

Close the vent
Tape a piece of cardboard over it.
Introduce white noise to your environment.
