People at school have spread an awful rumor?

Okay at school there is a girl who people do not like (not because she is a nasty person or anything but I do not want to go into the reasons) and because I am one of the only few people who talks to her some nasty person has spread a rumor that she and I are an item, anyway even as a joke this is not funny and is quite upsetting. Anyway on windows live people started a conversation making fun of me and being quite nasty.

One of my friends was the one who started that conversation and he has not appologised and thinks it is appropriate to continue with this for a joke. He lets his other friends (who I am sorry but they are truely nasty people who are absaloute scum for reasons such as they gossip make fun of people and are just generally horrible as a group).

What the hell should I do and should I talk to my friend about how he has made me feel and made this whole vicious rumor worse.
Oh and I do not like this girl (in that way)
 
It is the same with like me and this kid...
but anyway I understand exactly what you mean. I think you should ignore haters because only at the end, true friends will stick by you. Haters go away!@#$. Really, if you like being friends with her, then be friends. I am giving you great advice. Never care what others say because it'll make everything worse....be yourself and forget lies. Being an "item" is not nasty. Just if it isn't the truth, ignore what people lie about.

Hmmmmmmmmmm all i can tell you is that mabye you shouldnt tell people things becuz they will if it benifits them backstab you so if they are bitches then screw em

don't say anything like "ew I would never date her shes ugly" because that'll go back to her and make her feel really really bad.
instead don't even acknowledge the rumors, because when you react, you are only feeding fuel to the fire.
