Prepaid Plan vs Montly cellphone Plan? Which one you guys prefer?

i prefer prepaid.currenlty on o2 with a sony erricson c902 phone wich i bought seperatly for £150. i put £20 a month on my sim and get unlimeted texts and internet and can still spend my £20 plus i get o2 surprises like free vouchers and extra credit.but if i had a monthly plan i would be paying like £45 a month for the same plan so i thing my prepaid plan is much better
 
Like in general with any company, would you rather have monthly plan or prepaid plan? and for what reason?

PS: Do you have to buy the cellphone to have a prepaid plan with a company?
