I have a 1997 gmc jimmy. I had a problem when starting it. When I started it, it made a really bad grinding noise and seemed as if a tooth or some teeth on the flywheel broke off. Is this a common issue, or is there something else wrong with it that would cause it to do something similar to what it is doing? Right now, im thinkin that it needs a new flywheel from the way that it sounds when starting. It makes a loud clack noise and shackes violentely.

I might be a bad flywheel. It also might be a starter nose bushing that is worn out. This would cause the fit of the starter drive to the flywheel to be very open, making noise, and maybe eating the flywheel.

Are all of your guages okay? You may have thrown your belt. idk, I have a '98, and I know that a lot of the same vehicles have the same problems, so I hope whatever it is doesn't happen to mine!

Its probably the starter. The starters probably sticking the gear into the fly wheel. just replace starter.
