You should always back up your phone before updating. But if all goes smoothly it should install the new software and you shouldn't lose anything.

the message says "Updating to iOS 4.2 will backup and restore the apps, media, contacts, calendars, notes, textmessages, and settings on your iPhone."

i don't care if about my texts but everything else i don't want to be wiped clean.
there are certain apps on my phone where i have recorded songs i havn't written anywhere else, i have a mini dream diary that i really dont' want to be wiped clean.

those are my main concerns..

could someone explain exactly what this update will do to my phone? and what will be left when it's finished?

thanks.

I suggest saving any and ALLL data you dont want lost before doing that. That includes information in apps, pictures, notes, ANYTHING you want saved, back it up.

I tend to go through and screenshot everything. Some apps have pc/mac versions of the software which you may be able to sync with.

Some apps may save your information, but some wont. And I have lost pictures from my camera roll as well.
