So far I have read the Black Gryphon and the White Gryphon and loved them both.
Skandranon is my favorite character in both books.
The Black Gryphon was a little better as it talked more about war against an evil Mage named Ma'ar who wants to control all of Tantara and kill the good mage, Urtho. It also focused on how the doctors and ketra' cherms work behind the front lines to help the physically and psychologically wounded recover as they often get overlooked in other stories. A kestra'cherm is like a massage therapist/psychologist.
Skan and the gryphons also eventually figure out Urtho's "secret spell" which allows gryphons to become fertile and reproduce as they fear that Ma'ar may wipe their species out if they do not find out. (It's not really a magic spell though.)
The White Gryphon is a book that is more of a murder mystery and about being framed. Skandranon, Zhaneel, their kids, Amberdrake the Kestra'Cherm, Gesten, Winterhart, and others spot black tribesman called the Haighlei in ships coming to their new city of White Gryphon ten years after the war with Ma'ar. They agree to go to the tribesman's home city of Kambala to try and form an alliance.
But while they are there, brutal and mysterious murders that involve magic keep on occuring and Skandranon and Amberdrake get blamed for it. Though you later find out that a corrupted mage and thief among the Haighlei and a man named Hadenalith, a man who Amberdrake banned from White Gryphon are behind the murders.
But what I want to know is did any of the makaar or evil mages that fought for Ma'ar survive the devastation of Urtho's secret weapon at the end of the war the destroyed his tower and surrounding lands at the end of the Black Gryphon?
