Question about the history of Maserati (the car)?

Maserati was known for making race cars at first at the begining of the 20th century. Why did they stop making race cars and focus on making luxury cars now? I understand their current luxury cars are designed to go fast but what was their reason or intention to make Maserati a luxury car company?
 
They were bought by Fiat who owned Ferrari and didn't need a second racing brand.
 
really maserati has a hard core racing history since 1910 and still they use ferrari engines. its an italian manufacturer and its supercar market has new childs like lambo and increasing number of roadgoing ferrari. well maserati is of its only kind....
