Question about Verizon phone and wifi connection?

I just ordered the new HTC Rhyme. It has the option to connect to wifi. Which I have been using the wifi at my house. Does it still charge you for data when your not using the Verizon network?
I was wondering because unfortunetly Verizon is pretty expensive with the data plan and I can only use 2gs. If I go over I get charged :P
