I just started a new job where I work 5:30pm - 1:30am, needless to say I need something to record my favorite shows. I have been looking to buy a dvr or dvd recorder but with research am just more confused.
First off some basic info. I live in an apartment complex that comes with cable. I have what most people would call basic cable, that is just the cable line running from the wall jack to the back of the tv, and I get all the local channels and major networks but nothing more. So here are my questions:
Thru my research I read that they no longer make dvr or dvd recorders with tuners, why is this since not all people have boxes or sattelite? And for those of us with just a line from wall to tv how do I get something to record my shows?
Secondly, I notice most dvr providers require a monthly subscription, but it seems like the only thing the subscription really gives you is a tv guide to ease recording, is there any way to just get a dvr hard drive or dvd recorder with hard drive and just record straight to it without paying each month? Also it seems most dvr companies now make subscriptions mandetory, but what is the point IF people can buy some type of hard drive device to record shows?
Basically I just want to record my favorite shows when im working, would like to be able to do it automatically, would also like to be able to watch one thing while recording another, and NOT have to record straight to a tape or disc like a vcr but rather be able to record to a library where I can hold all my recorded stuff and choose what to watch. I also wouldn't mind a permanant storage option like being able to burn something in my library to dvd, but don't want to HAVE to record straight to it. Overall the ability to burn to permamant media is seconday to the other things I mentioned. Im sorry for the long entry, just wanted to be thorough, thanks for any help.
