R&S people:why do people argue over religion and the lack of religion?

Im an atheist who regularly visits the R&S part of yahoo answers because im fascinated with all religions and like to learn about them. [note that i said im fascinated in it, not that i want to convert]. but i noticed theres a lot of trouble making atheists who start stuff with christians and it gives a bad name to mellow, openminded atheists like me. on the other hand, a lot of close-minded, ignorant christians try to treat atheists like they are barbarians and have no right to live.

what is up with this? why cant everyone just be mellow and agree to disagree and live the way they want to live without belittling others? i dont understand

Yeah well whatever --

Hey, maybe that explains why religious people block me, delete my questions, and send me nasty emails.
Wow!

Because at some point, someone feels threatened by a different person's belief system- maybe because they're not 100% certain of their own, deep down inside, or if they're misunderstanding it, or afraid it can cause harm to themselves or loved ones- so they say something mean. The other party, seeing that this was unjustified in one way or another, lashes back. Rinse and repeat.

It is human nature to define "other" and then to try to get rid of it, because "other" is a threat to "me" or "us."

Oh, and if it's not that someone's feeling threatened in a scenario as above, it's that they're a douchebag stirring up trouble, which is also probably because they're feeling threatened or like they don't have any control or why didn't I go into psychology...
