Rant: Do you prefer Fantasy or Reality novels?

I don't know; the question came to mind. I've always been captivated by fantasy. The world is so boring and annoying, and fantasy takes you away from everything horrible and soaks you in dewy, childlike and wistful imagery. Even the darkest gory glory of the fantasy world is amazing. I also like fantasy because you get to experience life in someone else's shoes in a totally different world. I think I want to promote my dream of being a fantasy novelist as well. I've just turned fourteen.

However, I notice that all of my friends (every single one of them), prefers reality. I guess it's because they can relate to the characters more and that it's more simple and doesn't involve much thinking. Reality is reality. It's not that great and doesn't take much skill to write. I think the reason Twilight is so popular, is because Bella is such an undeveloped and has such a stereotypical personality, that people can easily relate to her whiny and annoying persona. I know this sounds harsh, but what do you think?

Whoa, some of you people are epic ranters! Love you guys! However, NEVER CONSIDER TWILIGHT A FANTASY. It's too much crap and Meyer ruined vampires.

life is boring you do the same thing everyday
in fantasy theres a whole new world
anything can happen there are twists and turns

I have always loved fantasy. It takes you away in another world, however imaginative or boring it may be.

Reality gives you exactly what you asked for.

But saying that either one is easier to write than the other is wrong. Because honestly, both are equally difficult to write. Lets use some examples:

Twilight - This really is a fantasy novel, but since you used Bella as being equal to "reality" we will use it. You said, "I guess it's because they can relate to the characters more and that it's more simple and doesn't involve much thinking." This "reality" book was very simple to write, but the writing wasn't imaginative and didn't involve much thinking. Very difficult to write a "reality" novel of this nature.


Harry Potter - Another fantasy book. How many other people do you of know of who would sacrifice so many years of their life to write this epic adventure? Not only that, but the writing style is eloquent, simple, and clean. Equally, if not more, difficult.


So really, fantasy vs. reality is quite subjective to people and their feelings. Both genres are quite difficult to write. Anyone can be an author, it takes great skill to be a writer.

Forgive me, I suck at ranting. It'll probably end up being the size of a post-it.

Twilight, in my opinion, is a terrible example for a realism. No drama, no characters, just...bleh. I hate it. I'll note the most recent one I've read, My Sister's Keeper. A realism novel with just the problems of life and heavy issues of justice.

I'll flip your statement around, most good realism novels I've read are ones that spark your thinking a lot more than the fantasy ones that I've read. But most things I read involve tons of thinking anyway, even fantasy.

I -love- fantasy as well. I share your thoughts on it, and that's why I want to work in gaming, because gaming is something that takes you away from your life's problems. But I have to say, most fantasies I've read, not all, but most, are terrible. I'm not saying they're all bad, there are some golden ones out there, but most are totally flat.

Really, tl;dr, I like both genres, as long as they're written well. Can't choose one.
