I have a Rio Mp3 player -- Ce2100, which contains a SigmaTel Mp3 500 (STMP3500). It is 2.5 Gb.

It was dropped and the volumn wheel disconnected. The back was taken off and that's when things went wrong.

It will not turn on unless the reset is pressed first. It shows the Rio logo when the on button is pressed, holds for a short bit, then powers back off. It will power back up and continue cycling like that without any other action on your part. If you plug in the USB cord, sometimes it is recognized and sometimes it isn't by the computer. I know it's a STMP3500 only because it was recognized as such at one time. I made an attempt to flash the chip and to update the firmware. It seemed to respond somewhat to that.

It did show the "Idle" screen once and then powered off without coming back on. The battery symbol shows needing a charge and it's been left to charge for hours between the times I've tried tinkering with it.

Everytime I reset it, I have to reload the firmware and it's getting old. I'm now open to your ideas short of chucking it in the bin.

Well I have had a Rio CE2100 (2.5 GB) for 3 years now, and I'm getting sick and tired of it.
I have had so many problems with it, like it not being able to turn on, deleting my music, and the computer not being able to recognize it.

My only advice is to email Rio if you haven't already. They sell replacement parts on their website: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/rioaudio/default.asp?cat=35

I myself am upgrading to an iPod in a few weeks because my Rio is just falling apart.

Try selling your Rio on eBay or something (keep it loaded with music - people will pay more if it contains music), and getting some extra cash for a new iPod.

I know this isn't what you were looking for, but it's the only advice I can give.

Best Regards,
