Seagate portable hard disk not working!?

after plugging it in to the computer , the light does not turn on and it is not detected by the computer!
what is wrong? is the USB wire or port not working or is it the hard disk ( i hope not!)

has it always worked before? put your ear to the side of the case and see if the drive is spinning, if not it sounds as though its had it.
 
Process of elimination time:

a) does it work if you plug it into another computer? If it does, the computer is to blame
b) does it work if you plug it into another usb port? If it does, the usb port is to blame
The USB wire malfunctioning is very unlikely.

If it is not the port, and it is not the computer, than it is probably the external hard drive. If you figure out it is the external hard drive, it may be possible to get some information off of it. Just email me at [email protected] with the results. Don't forget to include the original question.
