When I was growing up, I always saw a bell ringer outside of the largest department store in my city.
They always wore the uniform of the Salvation Army. I moved around as an adult, and I didn't
notice when I began seeing bell ringers, that wore street clothes. I assumed that the bell ringers
had always been volunteers, who worked for Salvation Army at a regular job, and rang the bell as
volunteers. Then a few years ago, a friend told me a retired friend of hers, was paid the minimum
wage to be a bell wringer. And it was a hard job to actually work at, due to standing in one spot
for hours, and being so cold by the end of his shift, he was ready to return home long before his
shift was over. In areas where it is very cold at night, this must really be a challenge for older
people who are thin skinned, and feel cold when younger people, don't feel it's that cold. I know
that organization has several programs to help people stay sober. and can become good citizens
again. I know that all of these so called charity's, over pay their heads of the company. I worked
for them years ago, and we were told that this company began in England, and that the head,
actually owns and lives in a castle there. They call the store branches, "Sally's".
I didn't know they got paid.
My mother was a volunteer with them in the early 1940's or so when she was single and had extra time to help out with community things. She also volunteered at the USO.
Times have changed if it is a regular job now, weird.
As you open your pockets for the next natural disaster, please keep these
facts in mind:
? The American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans salary for the
year was $651,957 plus expenses
? The United Way President Brian Gallagher receives a $375,000 base salary
along with numerous expense benefits.
? UNICEF CEO Caryl M. Stern receives $1,200,000 per year (100k per month)
plus all expenses including a ROLLS ROYCE . Less than 5 cents of your
donated dollar goes to the cause.
? The Salvation Army's Commissioner Todd Bassett receives a salary of only
$13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2 billion dollar
organization. 96 percent of donated dollars go to the cause. To answer your question- Quite a few years BUT they only get a stipend
I knew someone who was a paid bell ring for the SA in about 1977, so quite a while.
Some are volunteers, though. I think they get more volunteers on weekends and pay people during weekdays.
