I am traveling abroad to Italy and was told to buy a SIM card to avoid roaming charges. I tossed my manual over 2 years ago when I got this phone, a Motorola KRZR K1m. It has a microSD chip slot, but I do not see a sim card anywhere, not underneath the battery or anywhere else. Do some phones just not come with SIM cards, depending on provider? Should I really worry about a SIM card while abroad?

First of all there are two types of networks. The first one is called CDMA network which can not be used internationally or for traveling. These network only work here in the USA and does not use any sim cards. You can call internationally but you will not be able to take your cell phone with you to make calls where you are going. Your cell phone Motorola KRZR K1m uses CDMA network and does not use any sim cards.

The other network GSM network is more well known internationally. It uses sim cards on all their cell phones. You can buy prepaid cell phones such as A T&T, T-Mobile or a contract cell phone from them and use their cell phone internationally with their sim cards. Yes you would definitely need a GSM cell phone and a sim card if you plan on using your cell phone internationally.

Most people would buy a unlock GSM network cell phone and this type of cell phone would work anywhere internationally with any company and all this is required to buy a cheap sim card at the destination of where they are going and insert it into this cell phone and make calls. The cell phone must be unlock meaning the software has been change so that you can use it with any other cell phone company internationally.
