Software for converting DVD/Movie files to mobile/creative zen MP3 player?

I would like to convert episodes of my sons favourite programs from either DVDs we have or avi files I already have on my PC so he can watch them on my mobile phone (X10) or on my creative zen whilst we are out or on our upcoming holiday, I believe they need to be converted to MPEG files but the program I have already does not have the facility to change output size and it converts it to a video which only uses a quarter of my phones screen. I don't mind paying a few pounds (preferably under or around the £10 price) for a good program but just need some good recommendations as when I google it so many options come up, I just don't know where to start.
