Speakers not in car doors?

Okay, so a mate is wanting to put a stereo in her pre 1950's car. There are no speaker holes in the doors and cutting into the doors isn't possible.
Are there any car speakers out there that don't need to be mounted in the doors that offer decent sound that aren't overly expensive?

You could mount tweeters up at the front, so they don't damage the interior. Put a couple mid range woofers in back. If there is a rear panel above the rear seat, you can remove it and make a new one to fit the speakers, save the old one.
