Ok from what i under stand is that you will take a class from 15 - 20 hours and then a pre-test or how ever you calll it on a small coarse. Then what from there? do you ever go on the road for a test?

I assume you mean the "normal" motorcycle license in Michigan?

If you take an MSF course, you'll take the test at the end of the MSF course. If you don't take the MSF course you take the test at one of many independent test organizations. See http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1627_46351_46352-167416--,00.html

In either case, the test is "parking lot practice" only. (As is the MSF course.) Yes, some of this parking lot practice includes simulated intersections, etc., but you can't compare it to real road riding in actual traffic.

Here are three links that discuss the Michigan test:

For some strange reason it is common in North America to be able to get a motorcycle license with zero experience on the road. This has always surprised me. In most European countries everybody has to do road training as well as road testing.
