Surround Sound 5.1 DVD Problem!?

I am using an old panasonic dvd r65 player and it says it supports 5.1 surround with a built in decoder, so it has the front left front right back left back right subwoofer and center outputs, but even when the player says its on 5.1 and NOT stereo, it only plays from the front left and right channels! i plugged in speakers to the other outputs and no sound came out. I think they are soldered on correctly because when i switch the player to surround sound mode there is a click.

Those home theater in a box are not a very good system. They are mainly designed for you to watch a movie with the built in player with surround sound. This will also depend on the DVD, it it has surround sound or not. The unit is not flexible for adding anything to them or for up grading. When one item fails in the unit, you have to replace the whole system. You might have a broken unit and it would not be cost effective in repairing. Hope this will help you out.
