this old surround sound won't play DVD's?

i have this old surround sound that won't play DVD's. it also wont play any sound out of the surround speakers. i hooked up some cheap speakers to the headphone spot and it played there. the display works and i hooked it up to my TV and it showed up on my TV. does anybody know why it won't play DVD's or sound?
it says JVC DVD digital theater system TH-F3 on the front
