volvo v40 wagon good, bad, indifferent?

Anyone have any opinions on this particular volvo. I currently own a 89 240 wagn and a 2000 xc wagn, both are great vehicles but the gas milaege for the xc is horrible. wondering about v40s reliability, trouble issues, and gas mileage. Also is this model pre ford. thanks for any info.
 
my 89 240 wagon is having alternator problems I think. It is draining the battery while running. I put a battery/alternator tester on it and the battery registers, but when I jump it to test the alternator The alternator will not register at all. This problem started after I had to make a quick stop and put the car in reverse. i think they are ok cars Japanese car are better Honda,Acura,Toyota = )
