I've always been a dog person. I love dogs. I know exactly what to do with any dog of most breeds from puppy to adulthood. As far as cats go, I always used to be scared of them (I was attacked by one as a small child.) I also used to have a really bad allergy to them, so I never had a reason to stop being scared. However, as I've gotten older, I've realized I actually really like cats. I know a lot of people who own cats and while getting to know these cats, I've realized my allergy as faded with time. I still get a bit sniffly at times, but once I'm around a certain cat for long enough, the allergy totally disappears.
I live in a city and most apartments don't allow you to own dogs, including the place I am moving to next. I really want a pet, though! I'm thinking about adopting a cat. I don't want to get a kitten, I want to get a cat between 1 and 5 years old from a shelter who needs a good home. What are some good pointers to give a first time cat owner?
