what are the benefits of connecting a blue ray with built in wifi to a standard tv?

GOAL-Get rid of cable/sat costs without updating tvs

basically i don't foresee being able to afford an hd tv anytime in the near future so i'm not concerned so much with optimizing clarity as expanding my video entertainment options via wifi.

Can you wirelessly connect blueray to non hd/non flat screen tv?
If you can can you go to any site?
and is blueray the only/best option for my goals?
