This is a question with several parts.....

1) What does it cost to test for first degree black belt at your school?

2) What is the minimum age requirement for a Black Belt at your school?

3) What is the minimum time required to go from white belt to Black Belt?

4) Does the certificate come form the organization, OR is it only from the school?
(If from an organization, what organization?)

...

1.) Testing: $0. Once you're ready for shodan (you've demonstrated the required capability -- in our art, an understanding of the basics), you're told you're being given a promotion, and the cost is 10,000 yen.

2.) None. I don't accept students under 16. My shidoshi accepted younger if the parent enrolled with them, but usually only about 14 or 15. And no one I knew under him made blackbelt before 17 or 18.

3.) No requirement. Organization wide, it varies. Some schools skip kyu ranks all together -- you go from white to black at your first evaluation. It's however long it takes to show a strong understanding of the fundamentals. If someone came in from another organization with similar training (for example, the Genbukan), and could perform Kihon Happo, atemi, and showed proficiency in movement and adaptation of techniques when shown, they could be there 20 minutes. Time has very little to do with capability, and capability should be rewarded. I teach mainly -jutsu. Not -do.

4.) For shodan and above, we still receive menkyo from the Bujinkan Hombu in Noda. You can get menkyo for kyu ranks, but they're mostly worthless -- other teachers within the organization may or may not acknowledge them.

1. In all, it probably costed about 150 dollars, because Kaicho, the grand master of Seido Karate was there at my promotion.
2. The minimum age was 7 years old.
3. The minimum time was dependent on how much you trained. I knew a kid who got his black belt when he was 7 because he trained every day for 4 hours a day from 4 years old. But the usual amount of training is 6 years, because most people train 4 times a week.
4. The certificate came form the organization. (Seido Karate)

In mine ( the school Song Moon Quan taekwondo), it is about 80 dollars to test (each test is the same amount of money). There is no minimum age, but that is because it's all 15+ in our age group. Time can vary greatly, but some of our blackbelts made first degree in 10-15 years training 5 hours a week. The certificate came from our own school of teaching (Song Moon Quan).

1) $150 for any dan, $80 for kyu if I remember correctly.
2) No minimum age however if it is taken before 15 then one will have to take it again sometime as an adult.
3) I think 4 years. He won't let someone promote unless they are ready in his eyes.
4) It's from his school which he heads (Global Budo Karate Alliance), he also heads his own small organization of somewhere between 8-12 schools, 2 in the US and the rest back in Japan.
