While researching Nors mythology and stuff on Wikipedia about magical swords and similar things, this idea sprung to mind but I don't know how it will turn out or end. Thus, I thought to get some feedback and maybe some ideas on how it will go from here. But enough said! Here's the plot. Sadly, I don't have a title yet but that's not needed at the beginning. Don't even know if I'll finish it anyway!
So to make a long story short, the hero of the story is an orphan begger boy (cliche I know) who lives in a ruined city with all the other beggers, outlaws, outcasts, you name it! Even rogues from different races (like elves, dwarves, and goblins) hang out there as all banned people are welcome. Rogue wizards and witches too. It's also the local garbage dump where every kingdom dumps their trash and stuff.
So one day while foraging through the mountains of garbage, he discovers an old hilt, handle and crosspiece of a sword. It's all that remains of it as the blade has either rusted away or been destroyed somehow. Needless to say, he's curious about it and tries to find out all he can which isn't much considering his circumstances. Since he isn't satisfied with what he discovered, he decides to make up a story and tells it to a grizzled old dwarf who is his only friend in the ruined city and kind of like a father figure.
The dwarf likes it and suggests that the boy tells the story as a bard to earn money. The event quickly becomes popular until the boy finds out that his story is more or less real. To make matters worse, he learns the hard way as the bad guy/villain of the story is looking for the hilt to reforge the sword as it has magical powers or something. Of course, he has to stop him by making the blade appear once more before the bad guy does.
Well, that's about it. So what do you think? Is it cheasy and stereotyped? Or is there any hope for the story? Here are some names for the sword and, possibly, the title too.
1) Shadow Reaper (it could also be for the title)
2) The Star Sword (same as above)
3) The Burning Blade (same as above)
4) The Red Sword (then I could call the book Red Sword Rising)
5) It would be called something which means 'Sword of the Fallen'. I do like that idea as it is in sync with my story but I need help. Any thoughts?
What about - Shadow Reaper: Sword of the Fallen? How does that sound?
