What awareness does in madden 09 on ps2?

i still have trouble understanding the whole idea about awareness. i really don't get what it does. it seems to be very detrimental to a player's overall. some guys stats are identical yet one guy is 8 less overall because is awareness is 20 or 30 less. the first person to break this down for me for each position i will award the best answer
