What codecs/directshow filters do i need for Divx and Windows media player?

Hi, I have some videos (.avi mostly) that I got from friends that say they need either directshow filters or "codecs". I dont know what either of these are, and when I tried to download and install them i just got confused. What do I need to do to watch these vids with sound?
